Oricó River Springs
Seeks to restore and conserve the Oricó River watershed in southern Bahia, ensuring water for approximately 80,000 people.
Location
Location
Community
The project area covers the south region of Bahia, within the Atlantic Forest biome, and
is implemented in the municipality of Ibirapitanga, in the Oricó River watershed. Fifteen
family farmers will be directly benefited and will receive forest maintenance and
monitoring services to be carried out by the Organização de Conservação da Terra
(OCT) — Organization for Land Conservation.

Species
Seedlings of native Atlantic Forest species and regionally occurring fruit trees will be
planted. The selection of species will be carried out along with the beneficiary families.

Activities
Carry out a visual assessment of 10 hectares surrounding headwaters undergoing forest restoration.
Monitoring is a key stage of ecological restoration and is essential to evaluate the success of forest recovery, verifying whether the area is following the desired ecological trajectory in terms of forest physiognomy and the provision of ecosystem services. Establish sampling plots for collection, analysis and assessment of forest physiognomy formation, using the Monitoring and Evaluation Protocol with the Rapid Environmental Diagnosis (DAR) methodology across the 40 selected headwaters.
Provide forest maintenance services on 10 hectares around headwaters under restoration.
Forest maintenance is essential to ensure the success of ecological restoration and focuses on controlling factors that hinder the growth of planted forest species, such as competition for light, water and nutrients. The proposal foresees maintenance of 10 hectares around 40 headwaters, with field visits and evaluations over an 18-month period.
